SOCIAL MEDIA AS SOCIAL DISASTER FOR
YOUTH:
This piece of writing
revolves around the impact of an excessive use of social media on youth without
proper training. It will elaborate how social media without proper training is
a disaster for youth particularly. The term social disaster actually describes
the negative impact of social media on youth’s life.
Key terms used are,
youth, social media, technology, (internet, face book, twitter, Instagram , Skype,
changing’s in attitude.
INTRODUCTION:
Pakistan is a
resourceful country but unfortunately we are badly managed nation. Introduction
of technology in country Pakistan like without training is a social disaster.
Technology is the use of science to invent useful things to solve problems to
make communication easier technology introduced social media fortunately but
this social media played a role of social disaster unfortunately in every
individual’s life specifically the young generation named as youth. Access to
internet is an opportunity but excessive use of internet is the cause for
social disaster. Today’s youth is highly addicted to social media spending whole
days on Facebook, twitter, Instagram etc. Searching on internet is useful when
purpose is to study E Books, journals, articles but spending hours on useless
chat, video calls is social disaster.
Social
Disaster:
Social media as social
disaster means the force that creates disturbance in society and disturb the
norms and values of society. Youth who are highly addicted to social media are
forgetting their family value system. Youth feel more comfortable in spending
time on social media instead of sitting with family members. Family gatherings,
sharing happiness’s and taking parts in sorrows are becoming less interesting
and less attentive for the youth. Youth has found social media as a family and
giving less attention to the real relations and family. A time will come where
youth could feel frustration to enter into home under same roof because youth
has started developing perception that everything is social media. They feel
like social media is even a good friend of theirs.
Youth:
Here youth mean the youngsters
who are school, college and university going students. Who are in a stage where
training and counselling is important rather than giving free access to social
media? This young youth is immaturely using a very mature technology. In real
terms this social media is using our youth.
Changing
attitude:
Relationship with a
living and none living thing both influence the interacted person either in a
positively or in a negative manner. Talking about youth’s interaction with
social media; it is changing the attitude of our youth in a negative way. Youth
don’t have time to eat study and spare time with family members properly. This
will develop a gap between parents and youth there will be less understanding.
Occurrences of such Changing’ in youth’s behavior is a social disaster
LITERATURE
REVIEW:
Dynamic new time-diary
data identify when and where Internet use impacts face-to-face interactions.
Internet use at home has a strong negative impact on time spent with friends
and family as well as time spent on social activities, but Internet use at work
has no such effect. Similarly, Internet use during weekend days is more
strongly related to decreased time spent with friends and family and on social
activities than Internet use during weekdays (NORMAN H. NIE D. SUNSHINE
HILLYGUS).
The hypothesis is quite
simple: the Internet has created a shift in people’s time allocation. The more
time they sit in front of a computer screen, the less time they have for
interacting directly with family and friends. This “displacement” model holds
that time on one activity simply cannot be spent on another activity, since
time is a zero-sum phenomenon. Because there are only 24 hours in a day, time
spent on one activity must often be traded off against time spent on other activities.
Like any activity, time online fundamentally competes with, rather than
complements, face-to-face social time (NORMAN H. NIE D. SUNSHINE.
CONCLUSION:
The styles differ when controlling for parent gender,
educational background and age. Parenting styles are also linked to level of
parent Internet usage, Internet attitude and Internet experience. Parenting
styles also significantly affect child Internet usage. The highest child usage
level is perceived when parents adopt a permissive parenting style; the lowest
level is observed when parents adopt an authoritarian Internet parenting style.
The variables Internet parenting style, parent Internet behavior, and parent
educational background significantly predict Internet usage of children at
home.
Social media is using our youth and our youth
is unable to use social media properly. Until and unless a proper training is
not given to youth they will not be career oriented will just move randomly in
fantasy. Question is How to train youth although purchase of social media
is their own choice?

Does a social medium use us or do we use it?
I was very
happy with social media at the very beginning and it’s a matter 2007 when I
started using orkut.com to connect with friends. I started sign in twice a day
then thrice a day and a time occur when I started using it so frequently that
even I forgot to eat and drink. I stopped moving towards books and homework’s
and a time came when I stopped even sleeping without realizing that the orkut
that actually i consider my friend is not so in reality. I was with a
perception that I am using social media couldn’t know that actually this orkut
is using me. It’s controlling my life style and all the good behaviours that I
posses. The social networks were necessary evil,
and as such, they must be managed, just like every other distraction in our
lives. I still have my days when I find myself aimlessly surfing Face book,
looking at what people are doing getting into conversations, playing. I allot
time in my day to look at my social networks, but I allot much more time in my
day to read. And most importantly, I have that sacred four hour stretch—twelve
to four, five days a week—that is dedicated to nothing but putting words on
paper. Then I quit and tried to avoid it but I came to know about face
book that initially made me avoid facing my own books. The modified social
media inform of face book was more attractive than orkut even. I experienced
same things wastage of time, moving away from books. Then again I quit from face
book. After some time again I login into face book and found it so useful that I
got admission in a prestige university from an AD on face book. I realized that
since 2007 when I started using social media this social media was using me.
Was distracting I from being a good person diverted my mind from studies and
daily routine but then I managed with face book. Today for me social
media marketing is the “next big thing,” a temporary yet powerful fad that must
be taken advantage of while it’s still in the spotlight. To others, it’s a
buzzword with no practical advantages and a steep, complicated learning curve.
